You know that feeling when you finally find someone who is just as eager to talk about textile projects as you are? Someone who really gets it? Perhaps you’d like to have a pen pal with whom you can trade ideas, stories, accountability, or maybe just share how you’re holding up in these challenging times. Perhaps you could use a new friend.

Welcome to the Common Thread Pen Pal Program! Here’s how it will work.

  1. Fill in the sign-up form below.

  2. Wait to hear from Louisa, who will reach out by email to pair you with a buddy.

  3. Start emailing with your pen pal. Please try to commit to writing at least once per month, for at least 3-6 months.

  4. That’s it! Enjoy your new friendship. :)

Who is eligible?

Anyone who would like to have a pen pal is eligible, especially if you are a textile/fiber creative, or if you aspire to be one. You may be paired with someone whose primary medium is different from yours — and that’s great! It’s an opportunity for cross-pollination and the fresh energy of new ideas. It’s fine if you don’t identify as a maker yet — aspiring to make things is enough.

What would you be committing to?

By signing up for this program, you’d be committing to write to your buddy at least once per month, ideally for at least 3-6 months (or longer if you’d like!). This way you both have the chance to feel supported and encouraged by the other.

You’ll be emailing with your buddy initially, but after the initial introduction email, the two of you get to decide. You’re welcome to stick with emails, or exchange mailing addresses and start writing paper letters, or whatever else you’d like.
