With your own two hands, you can sew yourself a beautiful, cozy, sturdy turtleneck. In this two-session, live virtual class, learn the techniques needed to hand sew confidently with knit fabrics. Follow along as we build soft garments to keep ourselves warm.

This class is focused on construction of a scrunch-neck, long-sleeve top, but the skills you’ll learn can be applied to limitless other knit clothes.

We will meet on two consecutive Saturdays, for three hours each day. For those who wish to follow along, there will be some prep work before the first class (instructions will be sent ahead of time), and there will be some homework between class meetings.

This class will take place on Zoom. You'll be emailed a link before class. The recording will be available for a limited time after the class.

All levels are welcome. However, this class will be most helpful for students who already have some experience with garment sewing.

You’ll want to have some tools and materials on hand if you plan to follow along during the class:

  • midweight knit jersey (2-3 yards should be sufficient, but check your pattern for exact amounts, as they will vary by style, size, and yardage width)

  • matching thread

  • 12” of thin twill tape (no wider than 1/2”) or strip of woven fabric selvage

  • ballpoint hand-sewing needle

  • sewing shears

  • marking tool (such as water-soluble pencil or marker, hera marker, or even a plain 2B pencil)

  • ruler (clear, gridded, 2” x 18” is my favorite, but any will work)

  • tape measure

  • iron and ironing board

  • fine (thin) pins and pincushion

  • a few 4” x 4” swatches of your garment fabric for practicing stitches

  • turtleneck pattern (you may choose any pattern you’d like, or draft your own*)

  • paper scissors for cutting out pattern pieces

  • optional: thimble, thread snips, cake of wax such as beeswax or other thread conditioner

*For those interested in drafting their own turtleneck patterns, I’ll also be teaching a turtleneck patternmaking class on March 28.
